z'Howndz debut album is "Release":
As the title of the first song implies, this album is all about
"Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll"....The twelve songs
that follow are characteristically energetic, upbeat, loud, and
a little angry. The instrumentation recalls classic rock albums
of the 70's, but the songs have a lot of quirk and personality.
The album was recorded at Signal to Noise Studio by Rob Sanzo
with an entirely analog setup.
zHowndz is lead here by frontman and guitarist Ryder Graham.
He is backed up by Ben Boles (guitar), James Payment (drums) and
Shelton Deverell (keyboards). The band is composed of members
of Tetrezene, Do Make Say Think and Tangiers. "Release"
diversifies from the 5 song demo by the zHowndz; the four piece
collaborates with a horn section and a percussionist, to give
the album a lush and varied sound. These three players are Richard
Underhill, Brian Cram and Jonno Gooch.
Richard Underhill, the baritone saxaphone player, recently helped
to organized 950 saxaphonists to play the same song for the guiness
book of world records and has played in the shuffle demons. Brian
Cram, the trumpet player was asked to play with MC5 when they
came through town, as well as sings lead vocals in possibly the
only metal band in the universe to have a trumpet player. (gesundheit)
Jonno Gooch has played in the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, but in this
album makes use of tambourines and elastic bands, long whipping
sticks, and cups full of dice.
z'Hownd is a mutt, the kind of tough underdog you like to hear
because it barks really loud.
